Environmental Stewardship

The planet is at an inflection point. And it will take bold, relentless action to solve the climate crisis. That’s why we’re ‘all in’ on carbon negative by 2040 through direct carbon reduction and storage, without offsets.

With the help of our people, partners, and customers, we’ve made progress to meet our timebound commitments. We will continue to raise the bar for sustainability across the flooring industry and beyond, without compromise.

CLIMATE COMMITMENT

We started calculating our GHG emissions in 1996 and have made significant decarbonization progress on our 30+ year sustainability journey. We are committed to continuing this progress on our path to carbon negative by 2040.

2030 Science-Based Targets

Interface was the first flooring manufacturer to achieve third-party validation of our 2030 science-based targets (SBTs) by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in 2021. Our 1.5ºC aligned goals are in line with the level of ambition needed to reverse global warming. And our climate impact data shows that we’re making progress to achieve our 2030 SBTs, an important milestone on the path to our 2040 goal.

2040 Carbon Negative Goal

We are ‘all in’ on carbon negative by 2040. Our strategy centers on four key activities:

  • Avoid emissions where possible,
  • Reduce what we can’t avoid,
  • Store more carbon than we emit,
  • Inspire others for an even bigger impact.

Circular Economy

Developing a circular economy is key to reaching carbon goals, for ourselves and for our customers. At Interface, more than 85% of our footprint comes from the products we make. To change that, our approach is about more than one material, innovation, or product. It’s about rethinking every stage of the life cycle from design, to materials, and renewal.

Our ReEntry Reclamation & Recycling program has been active for more than 30 years. Through these regional initiatives, we collect and repurpose used carpet tiles, effectively closing the loop for our products.

Based on the material’s condition and composition, we divert returned products to their most sustainable option: reuse, recycling, or energy recovery. The direct reuse of post-consumer carpet tiles by local partners, charities, or community projects remains the first and most important part of ReEntry.

Product Impacts

We have made incredible progress reducing the carbon footprint of our flooring portfolio, and we continue to invest in innovation across our product lines to drive further reductions.

Commitment to Transparency

We are committed to transparency and the voluntary disclosure of product impacts. We embrace tools that encourage transparency, like Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Health Product Declarations (HPDs), and many of our products have achieved strict environmental and health standards and certifications.
